Akwa Ibom Police Arrest Masquerades Over Public Disturbance in Etinan

Ahe Akwa Ibom State Police Command has apprehended two masquerades and their leader for allegedly causing a breach of public peace in Etinan Local Government Area.

DSP Timfon John, the command’s spokesperson, confirmed the arrests in a statement on Sunday, January 26, 2026, noting that the suspects are currently assisting police with ongoing investigations.

According to the statement, the arrests were made under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammad Azare, as part of the command’s efforts to maintain law, order, and public safety across the state.

The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, January 23, 2026, around 4:45 p.m., when a distress call from an anonymous source alerted police to violent and disorderly conduct by masquerades in Mbioto II Village, Etinan LGA.

“Upon receipt of the information, police operatives were promptly mobilised and arrested two suspected masquerades and their leader,” the statement read.

The suspects were identified as Kenneth Bassey, 31; Ofonime Isaac, 25; and Paul Samuel Bassey, 21. They are now in police custody assisting with investigations.

CP Azare commended the swift response of his officers and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to public safety. He stressed that while the police respect Akwa Ibom’s rich cultural heritage and traditional practices, any activities that escalate into violence, intimidation, or threaten public order will be met with the full force of the law.
