The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has announced the suspension of the industrial action embarked upon by its workers following a resolution reached between the company’s management and labour unions.
In a statement signed by the Head of Corporate Communications, Sani Bala Sani, KEDCO said the decision to call off the strike came after “productive engagements and concrete resolutions reached by all parties.”
According to the statement, the breakthrough was made possible through the “constructive efforts” of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Future Energies Africa (FEA), the core investors in KEDCO and the Kano State Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy.
“The Management of Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) wishes to inform the general public, our esteemed customers, and all stakeholders of the suspension of the ongoing industrial action following productive engagements and concrete resolutions reached by all parties,” the company stated.
KEDCO explained that resolving inherited issues such as unpaid pension obligations, employee emoluments, and other benefits has been a major focus since the restructuring exercise that brought FEA on board as core investors. “The company is making progress and anticipates that our current plan and trajectory will resolve these inherited issues,” it added.
Among the resolutions reached was the payment of outstanding arrears, including a 13th-month salary (bonus) arrear of ₦150million and an appraisal bonus of ₦20million, both dating back to 2019 and 2022, respectively, making a total of ₦170 million.
“This demonstrates management’s commitment to honouring its obligations to the workforce,” the statement noted.
In addition, KEDCO said it has committed to paying the 2025 13th-month salary arrears of ₦174 million in the February 2026 salary cycle, alongside regular salary payments.
The company also revealed plans to establish an expanded dialogue framework that would involve the NLC Secretariat, electricity labour unions, and KEDCO’s Board to address other outstanding complex issues.
“This collaborative approach ensures lasting solutions that serve the interests of all parties,” KEDCO emphasised.
As part of the agreement, all parties also committed to a no-victimisation clause, guaranteeing that no worker or stakeholder will face victimisation over their involvement in the strike action.
The company expressed appreciation to its customers for their patience during the period of disruption. “Enhanced resolution frameworks are being developed to ensure no recurrence of this type of action happens under our watch,” KEDCO assured.
“With the suspension of the industrial action, normal operations have resumed across all our service areas,” the statement concluded. “We assure our customers of our continued dedication to providing a reliable and efficient electricity supply. We remain committed to improving service delivery, maintaining harmonious labour relations, and ensuring sustainable operations that benefit all stakeholders.”
