TikTok secures US operations with new ownership structure, avoiding nationwide ban

Published:

TikTok and its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, have finalized a deal to transfer key parts of TikTok’s US operations to non-Chinese owners, marking a major step in safeguarding the app’s presence in the world’s largest digital market.

The move ends years of uncertainty over potential regulatory action and a possible nationwide ban.

The new structure will see TikTok operate under a US-based entity, enabling greater transparency and regulatory oversight for American authorities. Analysts note that the agreement addresses longstanding national security concerns cited by policymakers, who have questioned ByteDance’s ownership and data access practices.

Jane Thompson, a tech policy analyst at the Center for Digital Governance, said, “This deal reflects a pragmatic approach by TikTok to address long-standing US regulatory concerns. By placing ownership under a US-based entity, TikTok demonstrates a commitment to transparency and compliance, which could become a model for other global platforms navigating geopolitical scrutiny.”

Also, Rajiv Mehta, digital marketing strategist at GlobalAd Insights, noted: “TikTok’s continued presence in the US is a relief for advertisers. The platform has become indispensable for reaching younger audiences and influencer-driven campaigns. Any disruption or ban would have had significant ripple effects on the digital marketing ecosystem.”

The arrangement also highlights the growing trend of global tech firms adjusting corporate structures to meet geopolitical and regulatory requirements, particularly in sensitive markets. Investors and market watchers see it as a potential blueprint for other Chinese-owned platforms seeking to maintain operations amid heightened US scrutiny.

TikTok’s US future had been uncertain following repeated government threats over data privacy and national security risks. By placing ownership under American control, the company aims to demonstrate compliance and operational independence from ByteDance while retaining access to its user base and monetization avenues.
