A Professor of Communications at Baze University, Abuja, Abiodun Adeniyi, has said that there is a problem with the character of democracy operated in Nigeria.
Prof Adeniyi said this on Thursday while responding to questions in an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’, monitored by DAILY POST.
He said: “The problem in reverse is becoming like a bad coin, and it is one too many. But it does appear to me that institutions are also getting weary, even if individuals have expressed some kind of exasperation in time past.
“But institutions are picking that up from individuals, and that might actually be what we need, and of course, it speaks to the kind of democracy that we actually are.
“We often commend the fact that we celebrate longevity. That’s fine. This is the longest stretch we have had since independence. And of course, we’ve done about seven elections, next year will be the eighth.
“There’s a problem with the character of the democracy we operate in Nigeria. And it has to do again, perhaps to some extent, our attitude towards it. Still a lot of limitations that will often identify, and we seem to be making progress too slowly.”
