Lagos police speak on allegations of power abuse against DPO

Published:

The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed viral claims of misconduct against the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Olosan Police Station, CSP Ayanwale Ayodeji.

The controversy began after a social media post by X user Akin Akinwale (@mrlurvy) alleged that his friend was being intimidated by the DPO. According to the post, the dispute arose when the friend’s vehicle accidentally brushed a car linked to the DPO’s associate, with claims that the DPO threatened to jail the motorist.

The post quickly gained traction online, prompting intervention from the Police Complaint Response Unit (CRU) and the Command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi.

Providing clarification, Adebisi described the viral tweet as “malicious and misleading,” stressing that the DPO had no personal involvement in the matter. “Contrary to the claim, the DPO never threatened to jail the said ‘friend’ or made any statement. In fact, both parties never met with the DPO before the tweet,” she said.

She explained that the incident involved a car parked for sale, which was damaged by the complainant’s friend. The motorist offered ₦30,000 for repairs, but the car owner, identified as a lawyer, rejected the offer, insisting on ₦500,000 to cover proper repairs. Unable to reach an agreement, the car owner indicated his intention to pursue the matter in court.

Adebisi noted that the misleading post had unfairly tarnished the reputation of both the DPO and the Command, while assuring that the police were working to resolve the dispute through lawful means.
