Diesel tanker overturns, spills content in Lagos

Published:

The Lagos State government has cautioned residents on the danger of scooping fuel at accident scenes after a diesel tanker overturned on the Tincan–Liverpool Bridge in Apapa and spilled its content.

The incident caused traffic gridlock on the busy Mile 2 corridor.

In an emergency statement on Monday, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), through its Permanent Secretary Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed that responders had been deployed to the scene.

“Our attention has been brought to a fallen tanker at the above location, which is leaking fuel. All emergency responders have been activated and are en route to the location,” the statement read.

The agency warned against dangerous behaviour, particularly scooping fuel from the spill.

“Members of the public are urged to exercise EXTREME CAUTION to avoid any secondary incident from scooping product or lighting any flame near the area,” LASEMA cautioned.

“Motorists are advised to take alternative routes. Disaster management plan has been activated. Updates to follow.”

Videos circulating online showed residents collecting diesel from the fallen tanker despite the risks.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the tanker was loaded with diesel and that the spill was spreading due to damage to the tank.

“There’s a fallen tanker loaded with diesel on top Liverpool Bridge inward Mile 2. The diesel is spreading on the bridge as a result of the damaged tank,” LASTMA said via its official X handle.

Security agencies, including the Nigerian Police Force, have been alerted, and traffic has been diverted to reduce danger to commuters. LASTMA urged drivers to comply with officials on ground: “Please adhere strictly to all instructions from the traffic managers.”

Officials reiterated that scooping fuel from accident scenes poses grave risks, including fire outbreaks and potential loss of lives, as emergency teams continue efforts to secure the area.
