Senegal seal extra-time win over Morocco as late drama dents AFCON final

The Teranga Lions of Senegal have emerged champions of Africa yet again after beating the Atlas Lions of Morocco in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Sunday night.

The game played in Rabat, Morocco saw a lot of drama towards the end, with Senegal coaching crew alongside players walked out in protest creating a complete chaos.

A Senegal goal had been disallowed after Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi appeared to have been pushed in the buildup. Few minutes after Brahim Diaz was pushed down in Senegalese box.

After a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty to Morocco deep in stoppage time, and Senegal would not have it. Coach Pape Thiaw led his players off.

It took many intervention and captain Sadio Mane’s push of his teammates to bring the entire squad out of the dressing room to continue the game.

Interestingly, Diaz stepped up to take the penalty, and missed it, forcing the game into extra time.

And just four minutes into extra-time, Mane assisted Pape Gueye for a stunning goal that eventually became the winner, handing Senegal their second title.
