Atiku says son’s defection to APC a personal decision

Published:

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described his son Abba Abubakar’s move to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a personal choice, stressing that it is not a cause for concern.

In a statement released on Thursday via X, Atiku explained that political decisions made by family members are normal in a democracy. He emphasised that he does not interfere with the conscience of his children or Nigerians. “The decision of my son, Abba Abubakar, to join the APC is entirely personal. In a democracy, such choices are neither unusual nor alarming, even when family and politics intersect,” he said.

Atiku added: “As a democrat, I do not coerce my own children in matters of conscience, and I certainly will not coerce Nigerians.”

While acknowledging his son’s choice, Atiku criticised the APC’s governance, saying his main concern remains the state of the country. “What truly concerns me is the poor governance of the APC and the severe economic and social hardships it has imposed on our people,” he noted. He reaffirmed his commitment to working with other patriots to restore good governance and provide Nigerians with a credible alternative.

Abba Abubakar formally announced his defection from the PDP to the APC on Thursday at the National Assembly in Abuja. He was received by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and other APC leaders from the North-East.

Addressing party members, Abba described his decision as historic and personal. He praised Senator Jibrin’s leadership style and pledged to mobilise support for President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid in 2027. “With this development, I will work with Senator Barau to actualise the second-term bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. To this effect, I’m directing all coordinators of my association to join the APC and work for President Tinubu,” he said.

The defection has sparked political reactions, with some analysts viewing it as symbolic given Atiku’s long-standing opposition to the APC. However, Atiku insists his son’s choice does not alter his own political stance, reiterating his focus on governance reforms and offering Nigerians relief and progress.
