Court dismisses FG’s criminal case against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan

Published:

An Abuja High Court on Thursday struck out criminal charges filed by the Federal Government against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, ending a high-profile case that had stirred national debate.

The charges, which included criminal defamation, were discontinued after the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation filed a formal Notice of Discontinuance dated December 12, 2025. The case, registered as suit number FHC/ABJ/CR/195/2025, stemmed from remarks allegedly made by the senator during a televised interview.

Presiding judge, Justice C. N. Oji, acknowledged the notice and struck out the case, stressing the importance of restraint in the use of prosecutorial powers. “The court hopes that this decision will pave the way for restraint, healing, and respect for the rule of law in our democratic process,” he said.

Counsel representing the Federal Government confirmed the withdrawal in court, stating that the move was made in line with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act and in the interest of justice and public confidence.

Reacting to the ruling, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan described the outcome as vindication. “Today’s outcome affirms my belief in the rule of law. I remain committed to serving my constituents and defending the democratic rights of all Nigerians,” she said, thanking her legal team and supporters for their steadfastness.

The case had drawn widespread criticism from civil society groups and rights advocates, who condemned it as an attempt to suppress free speech and political participation. Its dismissal marks the conclusion of months of legal controversy and public discourse over the boundaries of expression and accountability in Nigeria’s democracy.
