The African Democratic Congress (ADC)says it has inaugurated a 21-member Constitution Review Committee as part of efforts to strengthen internal democracy and reinforce its guiding principles.
Senior Advocate of Nigeria Etigwe Uwa (SAN) was named chairman of the committee.
Other members include Prof. Lawal Salihu, former Imo State governor Emeka Ihedioha, Senators Enyinnaya Abaribe and Ehigie Uzamere, and Peter Oyewole, among others.
The inauguration, held Thursday in Abuja, was presided over by ADC National Chairman and former Senate President David Mark, who tasked the committee with developing a framework that promotes inclusiveness, transparency, and accountability while staying true to the party’s founding ideals.
“As our party continues to expand in reach and responsibility, it is both necessary and timely to review our constitution to ensure it reflects present realities, anticipates future challenges, and aligns with global best practices in democratic party administration,” Mark said.

Since July 2025, when ADC was adopted as the coalition platform for opposition leaders preparing to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections, the party has been consolidating structures nationwide. Under Mark’s leadership as chairman and former Osun governor Rauf Aregbesola as secretary, ADC has sought to boost credibility and broaden its appeal.
Mark emphasized that a party constitution serves as both a moral compass and a legal foundation, shaping ideology, regulating internal operations, and safeguarding democracy. He outlined the committee’s tasks, which include:
Strengthening inclusiveness for women, youths, and persons with disabilities.
Reviewing roles and powers of party organs.
Ensuring fairness in primaries, congresses, and dispute resolution.
Aligning the ADC constitution with national laws and electoral regulations.
The committee is expected to submit an interim report with proposed amendments within 30 days.
In his response, Uwa pledged a comprehensive and inclusive review process.
“Constitutions should be broad and embracing, providing democratic means for selection of party offices and flagbearers for elective positions. The review is not because the current constitution is deficient, but to make it even better and to attract more Nigerians into the party,” he said.
