INEC urges Lagosians to join second phase of voter registration

Published:

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos has appealed to eligible residents to take part in the second phase of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR).

Resident Electoral Commissioner Ayobami Salami made the call in a statement issued on Thursday, noting that the first phase of the nationwide exercise, which began on August 18, 2025, ended on December 10, 2025.

Salami explained that the second phase commenced on January 5 across all local government areas and at INEC’s Lagos headquarters. “We want to encourage more Lagosians to take advantage of this opportunity to register and exercise their civic duty. The eligibility criteria and timeline remain unchanged,” he said.

He added that beginning in February 2026, the registration process will adopt a rotational system within Registration Areas to make participation easier and more convenient.

According to Salami, INEC officials are fully prepared to deliver a transparent and efficient exercise, though turnout has been relatively low so far. He stressed that the second phase will run until April 17, 2026.

Salami also warned against any form of disruption or misconduct at registration centres. “Security agencies have been alerted to ensure a peaceful and orderly process. We will ensure that the registration process is conducted in a safe and secure environment for all participants,” he assured.

The commission confirmed that the third phase of CVR will begin on May 4 and conclude on August 17, 2026, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
