Barely 48 hours after the deadly attack on Kasuwan-Daji market in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, gunmen have again struck the area, targeting a Mobile Police (MOPOL) checkpoint in New Kalli, Wawa Ward.
Sources told AIT that the attackers stormed the checkpoint in the early hours of Sunday, January 4, at about 12:30 am, setting fire to the officers’ living quarters, destroying farm produce and looting personal belongings.
“There were no casualties in the attack, but they burnt the policemen’s room and packed some of their belongings before escaping,” a local source said.
Another resident confirmed the incident, saying the gunmen operated unhindered.
“They came in the night, set the place on fire and left. People are now living in fear because this is the second attack within a short time,” the resident said.
The renewed attack comes on the heels of the Kasuwan-Daji market assault, which left about 42 people dead, with scores of others, including children and elderly women, abducted by the attackers.
“The community has not recovered from the market attack when this one happened,” another source said.
“Everyone is worried because if even a police checkpoint can be attacked, then nowhere feels safe.”
Residents have continued to call on security agencies and the Niger State Government to urgently reinforce security in Borgu and surrounding communities to prevent further attacks.
