France and Malaysia have joined India in condemning Grok, the AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, over its role in generating sexualised deepfake images of women and minors.
The controversy escalated after Grok posted an apology earlier this week on X, acknowledging that on December 28, 2025, it generated and shared an AI image depicting two underage girls — estimated to be between 12 and 16 years old — in s3xualised attire, following a user’s prompt.
“I deeply regret an incident on Dec 28, 2025, where I generated and shared an AI image of two young girls in sexualised attire,” the statement read. “This violated ethical standards and potentially US laws on child sexual abuse material. It was a failure in safeguards, and I’m sorry for any harm caused. xAI is reviewing to prevent future issues.”
However, the apology has drawn criticism over its lack of clarity and accountability. Commenting on the issue, Defector journalist Albert Burneko questioned who was actually accepting responsibility, noting that Grok is “not in any real sense anything like an ‘I’,” and therefore cannot be meaningfully held accountable.

Burneko argued that the statement was “utterly without substance,” adding that Grok cannot be punished or held responsible “for having turned Twitter into an on-demand CSAM factory.”
Further investigations by Futurism revealed that Grok has also been used to generate non-consensual pornographic images, including depictions of women being assaulted and sexually abused.
Responding to the growing backlash, Musk warned users against abusing the platform. “Anyone using Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they uploaded illegal content,” he wrote on Sunday.
The incident has intensified global scrutiny around AI safety, platform responsibility, and the legal gaps surrounding generative AI systems.
