Mozambique President Daniel Francisco Chapo has congratulated the national football team, the Mambas, for advancing to the round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and announced a special bonus should they defeat Nigeria.

Despite finishing third in Group F after a 2-1 loss to Cameroon, the Mambas secured a spot in the knockout stage, where they are set to face one of the tournament’s heavyweights, the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

In a message delivered to players and coaching staff on Thursday, President Chapo described their performance as “unprecedented” and a source of national pride. He praised the squad for their courage, discipline, and determination in reaching this significant milestone on the continental stage.

To incentivize the team, the president pledged an extraordinary bonus of 500,000 meticais (approximately N11.3 million) for each player and member of the coaching staff if they succeed in defeating Nigeria and advance to the quarter-finals, according to Jornal Notícias.

President Chapo expressed confidence in the Mambas’ ability to triumph over Nigeria and assured full national support ahead of the high-stakes clash, which will take place at the Complexe Sportif de Fès on Monday, January 5, with kickoff scheduled for 8 p.m.
