Two die in Kano pit collapse

No fewer than two persons have reportedly lost their lives following a pit collapse in Ridawa village, Ghari Local Government Area of Kano State.

The incident was said to have occurred around 10am on Wednesday when the persons were digging the sand pit for brick making and it suddenly caved in and trapped four of them in the process.

A local source, Mujitafa Hashimu, who confirmed the incident, said two (yet to be identified) lost their lives while two others survived with injuries.

Hashimu identified the survivors as Abdulsalam, 35, and Hadi, 15, while one of the deceased was around 25 years old and the other around 13 years old.

According to him, “The incident affected two minors and two adults who usually work at the excavating site where they dig sand for brick-making for building.

“The survivors were Abdulsalam, 35, and Hadi, 15, while the deceased, who are yet to be identified, are around 25 years and the other around 13 years old.

“Some of the victims were rescued around 2 pm while some were rescued around 5 pm through community efforts. The last who was rescued around 5 pm was among those who survived.

“The incident was the first ever in the community,” Hashimu concluded.

Meanwhile, when contacted, the spokesperson of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Yusif, said they didn’t receive any report or distress call regarding the incident.
