The House of Representatives member for Yewa North/Imeko-Afon Federal Constituency, Gboyega Nasir Isiaka, popularly known as GNI, has expressed his interest in the 2027 Ogun gubernatorial race.
DAILY POST reports this would be the fourth time he is contesting for the seat.
Recall that in 2011, Isaka contested the governorship election and polled 137,051 votes under the Peoples Party of Nigeria, losing to Sen. Ibikunle Amosun of the Action Congress of Nigeria who got 377,489 votes.
In 2015, he contested again under the Peoples Democratic Party, and also lost to Amosun, who was going for a second term.
Not giving up, in 2019, the Imeko-Afon born politician contested on the platform of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, and lost to Dapo Abiodun, who is currently governor of the state.
Following the 2019 elections, the legislator defected to the ruling party APC and won the Imeko-Afon/Yewa North House of Representatives seat in 2023.
Isiaka who serves as Chairman of the House Committee on National Planning and Economic Development, on Sunday during a media chat with journalists in Abeokuta, hinted that he is again ready to contest the governorship election in 2027.
The legislator stated that, while consultations are ongoing, he is the most qualified due to his years of experience and understanding of the state’s operations.
His words, “I’m expressing interest to run for the governorship of the state in 2027. I have an interest but it will be declared at the proper and appropriate time, but it is good to let you the media as major stakeholders in our democratic process know that I am interested in this race.
“And, expectedly I have been doing my preliminary consultation in line with the dictates of the party, I have in the past three weeks been meeting the stakeholders to let them know that I am in for the 2027 governorship race. And why am I doing this, I am bonafide indigene of the state, I have no controversy or anything hidden about that, so I am eminently qualified to contest.”
Isiaka stated that his desire to run for governor of the state for the fourth time stemmed from his determination to build a more economically viable Ogun State and make life better for residents through improved industrialisation, expanded access to quality healthcare and education, and job creation, among other things.
He debunked rumors that his governorship aspiration is being sponsored by Governor Dapo Abiodun, explaining that his determination to run for the office is solidly based on the reality that he has what it takes to propel the state to new heights in 2027.
