The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday criticised Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, claiming he is on the verge of emerging as the de facto chairman of a “one-man” governors’ forum within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The APC also declared that the opposition party is in its “final throes of relevance,” citing a wave of defections by PDP governors to the ruling party.
In a statement signed by its Lagos State Publicity Secretary, Seye Oladejo, the party said the dwindling number of PDP governors has reduced what was once a collective leadership structure into what it described as “a lonely outpost of dwindling influence.”
“Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State now stands on the brink of emerging as the de facto chairman of a ‘one-man PDP Governors Forum’—a development that perfectly captures the depth of the party’s collapse,” Oladejo said.
He argued that the steady exit of governors and key stakeholders from the PDP reflects a loss of confidence in the party’s leadership and internal cohesion.
“Let it be said plainly, this is not coincidence; it is rejection. The steady exodus of governors and key stakeholders is a direct vote of no confidence in the PDP’s leadership, its lack of ideological clarity, and its chronic inability to resolve internal crises,” he added.
Oladejo further maintained that a political party unable to manage its internal affairs should not be entrusted with governing a complex country like Nigeria, describing the PDP’s current situation as “a cautionary tale.”
The APC spokesman also expressed concern over what he termed the weakening of opposition politics in the country, warning that internal conflicts and lack of discipline within opposition parties could undermine Nigeria’s democracy.
According to him, opposition parties should emulate the APC’s approach during its years in opposition, which he said were marked by “sacrifice, resilience, discipline, and strategic patience.”
“The APC did not stumble into power; it built trust, earned legitimacy, and presented Nigerians with a clear and compelling alternative,” he said.
Oladejo, however, assured that the APC in Lagos State remains “focused, disciplined, and forward-looking,” stressing that the party would continue to consolidate its governance strides and strengthen democratic institutions.
“While others scatter and self-destruct, we continue to consolidate on progressive governance, deliver measurable results, and strengthen democratic institutions in the interest of all Nigerians,” he said.
