Former footballer Joey Barton has been arrested on suspicion of wounding following an alleged assault near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on Merseyside.
Merseyside Police confirmed that officers were called to Fairway on Sunday, where they found a man with injuries to his face and ribs. The victim was taken to hospital for assessment.
Barton, 43, and a 50-year-old man were both arrested on suspicion of wounding and remain in custody for questioning. News of Barton’s arrest emerged during a High Court libel hearing earlier, where a solicitor informed the court he was “currently being held in custody” in Liverpool.
Barton’s playing career included spells at Manchester City, Newcastle United, and Rangers, before he moved into football management in 2017.
