NOA Urges Strict Compliance With NiMET’s 2026 Climate Predictions

Published:

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged citizens to strictly adhere to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) to enhance planning in agriculture, disaster management, and other critical sectors.

Mr. Mkpoutom Mkpoutom, NOA Director in Akwa Ibom, told reporters weekend that the SCP offers “critical insights towards effective planning across key sectors.”

“The SCP provides detailed information on the expected rainfall patterns, onset and cessation dates of the rainy season. Complying with it will safeguard lives, livelihoods, and property,” Mkpoutom said.

He added that the prediction report also forecasts temperature variations and dry spell periods, making it a vital tool for farmers, water resource managers, health authorities, and construction planners.

“By understanding what the weather holds for 2026, our farmers can plan their planting calendars accurately, our communities can prepare for potential floods or dry spells, and our government can allocate resources effectively,” Mkpoutom said.

Highlighting the increasing volatility of weather patterns caused by climate change, he stressed that adherence to NiMET advisories would mitigate risks associated with floods, erosion, heatwaves, and poor agricultural yields.

The NOA director emphasised the agency’s commitment to translating climate prediction reports into major local languages to ensure accessibility for all citizens.

“Climate prediction is not just a scientific report; it is a tool for survival and prosperity for the people. Our community orientation and mobilisation officers will ensure that no one is left behind,” he said.
