Brace Yourselves, Lagos & Ogun! 25-Day Power Outage Looms

Published:

Get ready, Lagos and parts of Ogun State, because a 25-day power outage is about to hit! Starting July 28th, you can expect daily nine-hour blackouts from 8 am to 5 pm, all thanks to essential maintenance work by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

The Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED) confirmed the impending disruption. Speaking on TVC, ANED Chief Executive Officer, Sunday Oduntan, detailed the affected areas: the entirety of Lagos and parts of Ogun, including Sagamu, Ogijo, and Abeokuta. The TCN had earlier announced that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Nigeria Independent System Operator had approved this critical infrastructure upgrade. The work involves installing an Optical Ground Wire fibre cable on the Omotosho/Ikeja West 330kV transmission line, a crucial artery for bulk power to Lagos. This upgrade is scheduled to run until August 21, 2025.

While power will be restored through the line after each day’s work, other circuits will remain operational to try and maintain some stability. The TCN explained that this upgrade will allow for the full operationalization of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system, promising enhanced real-time monitoring and management of the power grid once completed.

Oduntan reiterated that the power system would be shut down for safety during the upgrade. Both Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IE) and Eko Disco (EKEDC) have issued notices, regretting the “intermittent power supply and load shedding” across their networks due to the TCN outage. Despite the inconvenience, Oduntan assured affected customers that normalcy would be restored within the stated timeframe. So, start planning for those daily power cuts now!
