Real Madrid secured their spot in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tonight with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Benfica at home, sealing a 3-1 aggregate win.
Benfica stunned the Santiago Bernabéu early, with Rafa Silva finding the net in the 14th minute to give the visitors a crucial away goal. However, Real Madrid quickly responded. Just two minutes later, Aurélien Tchouaméni, assisted by Federico Valverde, equalized for the hosts, bringing the score to 1-1.
The first half saw further drama, including a VAR review on an Arda GĂĽler goal in the 32nd minute, which ultimately kept the score at 1-1.
The second half remained tense. Benfica’s Nicolás Otamendi received a yellow card in the 51st minute, followed by Real Madrid’s Rodrygo Asensio in the 57th. The decisive moment came in the 80th minute when Vinicius Junior, assisted by Federico Valverde, scored to put Real Madrid ahead 2-1.
Despite a late yellow card for Benfica’s C. Palacios in stoppage time, Real Madrid held on to their lead, advancing to the next stage of the competition.
