The Lagos State Government has rolled out a comprehensive traffic diversion plan as crucial repair work begins on the Ogudu/Ifako Bridge. These essential repairs, previously postponed, are set to commence on Saturday, June 28, 2025, and will span 110 days, concluding on Wednesday, October 15, 2025. The extensive project aims to ensure the bridge’s long-term safety and structural integrity.
The repair work will be executed in eight distinct phases, affecting both directions of the bridge. The initial four phases, focusing on the inbound Alapere stretch, will run for 50 days, from June 28 to August 16. Following this, the fifth to eighth phases will tackle the inbound Oworonshoki section for 51 days, from August 16 to October 5.
Understanding the Diversions and Alternative Routes
According to Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the Commissioner for Transportation, motorists should prepare for partial closures. These will be limited to a 50-meter segment both before and after each active work zone, ensuring that one lane remains open near the repair area to minimize traffic impact.
Commuters are strongly advised to utilize the designated alternative routes:
- For motorists coming from Iyana Oworo (Phase One): You should proceed through Gbagada to connect Anthony, which provides easy access to Ikorodu Road, leading to various destinations.
- For motorists from Eko Bridge (Phase Two): Your route should be via Funsho Williams Avenue to connect Ikorodu Road.
Ensuring Smooth Traffic Flow and Commuter Cooperation
Commissioner Osiyemi assured Lagosians that the operation would be well-coordinated, with officers from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) fully deployed across affected corridors. “LASTMA personnel will be strategically stationed to manage flow, enforce diversions, and provide assistance as needed,” he confirmed, aiming to keep traffic disruptions to an absolute minimum.
The repairs are being managed by the Lagos State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure (Office of Infrastructure). The government appealed for patience and understanding from all road users, emphasizing that these partial closures are vital for the safe and efficient completion of the necessary bridge maintenance, especially concerning the expansion joints.
