Sam Altman, the CEO of leading AI startup OpenAI, recently confirmed he had a conversation with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to discuss the ongoing collaboration between their companies. This revelation came during a New York Times podcast on Tuesday.
This high-level discussion takes place amidst reports that Microsoft, a key financial supporter of OpenAI, has been negotiating changes to its investment terms, including how much ownership it will hold in the artificial intelligence firm. The Wall Street Journal previously indicated that Microsoft might even halt these discussions if they can’t agree on crucial matters, such as the size of Microsoft’s future stake.
Neither Microsoft nor OpenAI provided immediate comments when Reuters reached out outside of their normal business hours.
Altman, reflecting on the deep relationship between the two tech giants, admitted there are always “points of tension” in such close partnerships. However, he emphasized that, overall, the collaboration has been “really wonderfully good for both companies.” This suggests that despite the complexities of their financial arrangements, the strategic alliance remains mutually beneficial.
In separate news, Altman also shared that he had productive conversations with President Donald Trump regarding artificial intelligence. He praised Trump for understanding the significant geopolitical and economic importance of this rapidly developing technology.
