8 more arrested over Maiduguri mosque bombing

Published:

In a significant blow to the insurgency network in the Northeast, troops of Operation Hadin Kai have apprehended eight more suspects linked to the devastating Christmas Eve suicide bombing at a Maiduguri mosque.

This latest sweep follows the capture of the alleged mastermind, Sheriff Umar, who was intercepted by security forces in the Borno State capital just three days prior. The original attack, which occurred on December 24, 2025, involved a suicide bomber detonating an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at a mosque in the Gamboru Market. The blast claimed five lives and left 35 worshippers with varying degrees of injury.

According to a statement from Sani Uba, the Media Information Officer for Operation Hadin Kai, the new arrests were the result of a targeted raid in the Yan Lemu area of Mubi South LGA, Adamawa State.

During the raid, soldiers uncovered a cache of personal and financial items that investigators believe will provide a digital trail of the terror cell’s activities.

“A search of the suspects’ residence led to the recovery of cash, mobile phones, identification documents, ATM cards, jewellery and other personal effects which are currently undergoing forensic analysis,” Uba stated.

The military’s breakthrough came after interrogating a suspect already in custody, who reportedly pinpointed the key logistical players in the cell. Uba noted that this individual “positively identified the two principal suspects as those who supplied materials used in making the IED.”

The operation did not stop with the primary targets, as security forces moved to dismantle the entire household’s connection to the group. Uba added that “additional occupants of the residence were also linked to the network.”
