2027: ADC faction denies alliance with Atiku, Obi, Jonathan

Published:

A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by National Chairman Nafiu Gombe has dismissed reports that it is negotiating alliances with former President Goodluck Jonathan, ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and NNPP leader Rabiu Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a statement issued Thursday in Abuja, Gombe described the claims as false and misleading, insisting that his faction remains the party’s legitimate leadership and has not entered into any pact with opposition heavyweights.

“The party strongly appeals to its members and the general public to disregard the unfounded rumours circulating about political alignments involving individuals such as Atiku Abubakar, Mr Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Goodluck Jonathan,” he said.

Gombe stressed that the ADC is focused on building itself as an independent, ideology-driven platform rather than serving as a bargaining tool for elite political deals. He warned that only constitutionally recognised procedures would determine the party’s leadership and candidates for 2027.

“In accordance with the party’s constitution, only fully registered and financially up-to-date members are eligible to vote or be voted for in all party elections and congresses,” he added.

The factional chairman announced the inauguration of Zonal Congress Committees in three geopolitical zones as evidence of the party’s commitment to internal democracy.

South-West: Inaugurated January 7, 2026, in Ekiti State, chaired by Bala Sani, with Hon. Kyauta Yakubu heading the Appeal Committee.
South-East: Inaugurated the same day in Enugu State, chaired by Adamu Ado Dauda, with Mrs. Iyabo Alibi leading the Appeal Committee.
North-Central: Inaugurated January 5, 2026, chaired by Lolo Ehirudu, with Hon. Sa’ad Aboki as Appeal Committee chair.
Gombe said these steps underscored the faction’s insistence on due process, transparency, and unity, countering claims that the ADC was being hijacked through secret political arrangements.

The statement comes amid rising tension within opposition politics as the race for the ADC’s presidential ticket heats up. Disputes over leadership legitimacy, zoning, and consensus arrangements dominate internal debates.

Recently, Atiku Abubakar declared he would not withdraw from the 2027 race, describing calls for him to step aside as undemocratic. In a statement, Atiku accused the Presidency and the ruling APC of interfering in ADC’s internal affairs, particularly in the selection of its presidential candidate.

Alongside Atiku, Peter Obi and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi have also expressed interest in the ADC ticket, setting the stage for a fierce opposition primary ahead of the 2027 elections.
