Leadership highlights some of the defining social media moments that dominated timelines, trended for days, and sparked nationwide debates in 2025.

 

The ‘Achalugo’ Cultural Revival

Early in the year, the nickname “Achalugo” took Nigerian social media by storm following the release of the YouTube film ‘Love in Every Word’, Produced by Omoni Oboli, Starring Nollywood actors, Bamike BamBam Adenibuyan & Uzor Arukwe. What began as a movie reference quickly evolved into a cultural phenomenon, spilling into skits, music, couple content, and everyday online banter. The trend also reignited interest in traditional Igbo praise names such as “Odogwu” and “Achalugo”, expressions deeply rooted in admiration, affection, and respect. Their widespread digital adoption highlighted social media’s growing role in reviving and reshaping indigenous cultural expressions.

In April, Priscilla (Priscy) Ojo Nigerian social media influencer and daughter of Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo got married to Juma Mkambala (Juma Jux), Tanzanian singer and music star. Their union became one of the most talked-about celebrity weddings of 2025, gaining massive buzz online under the hashtag #JP2025. It involved Multiple Celebrations Across Countries and cultural traditions. Each part of the celebration drew huge attention, turning every moment into viral clips and trending discussions online. The wedding was a fashion spectacle, with aso ebi colors and designer outfits that set trends for wedding style in 2025. A massive 15-foot white wedding cake became another viral highlight. Beyond Just a Wedding, it also became a cross-cultural event celebrating Nigerian and Tanzanian traditions.

“KWAM 1” and “KWAM 2” Airport Saga

KWAM 1:

In August 2025, Fuji musician King Wasiu Ayinde Marshall (KWAM 1) was involved in a confrontation with airport security at Abuja Airport while boarding a ValueJet flight to Lagos. Anthony Joshua Survives Car Accident,

British-Nigerian boxing icon Anthony Joshua was involved in a fatal car crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, Nigeria, that claimed the lives of two of his close associates and left him with minor injuries.
